The competition was tough for the first SHRED event, and we still can’t imagine how our judges managed to pick just one winner per category out of 76 entries. The participation blew us away, and every piece of art submitted was totally radical. Our silent auction of the prints (benefiting Access Aquarium) raised over $700! The generosity and enthusiasm of the attendees who purchased those prints is humbling and exciting, and proof of the quality of work that was submitted for SHRED.
If you entered, thank you! If you attended the SHRED event on August 22, thank you! Heck, if you’re reading this blog post, thank you—our members, volunteers, and artists are stoked about this entire process. The Hampton Roads design community is amazing, and you proved it big time. We wish we could have rewarded everyone, but that’s not how competition works. Congratulations to our winners!

Jose Caballer, Chief Education Officer, The Skool – Director, AIGA Los Angeles

The winners for this category were selected by the attendees of the Coastal Edge ECSC Legends Gala during their cocktail reception on the night of the SHRED event at the Virginia Aquarium.
The winners for this category were selected based on number of Facebook votes (“likes” per entry as of August 19). Majority rules!
Each winner took home an official SHRED etched crystal trophy, a Surf/Skate Prize Pack (donated by Hotline and Cardinal Skate Shop) and a Limited Edition SHRED Swag Bag filled with things a design geek would love. Thank you again to all our sponsors for making these prizes, the event, and the competition itself possible.
Fear not, skate punks and surfers, SHRED is looking to make a comeback next summer! The competition is bound to heat up, so start thinking about your designs now. This party has just started… In the meantime, check in with AIGA HR throughout the year for more fun events, guest speakers, workshops and other design community involvement opportunities.
